How to choose fresh fish
If you are a fish lover like me, then you know how important it is to buy the freshest fish on the market and will like these fish buying tips.
This checklist summarises the main points to look for when choosing fish.
1 - Go to a reputable store or local fishmonger.
2- Check the skin and colour. Look for firm, shiny skin with bright natural colouring. It should bounce back when touched.
3- Check the eyes. Fresh fish should have clear, bright eyes, no cloudiness should be present.
4- Check the gills. They should be a rich red and wet, not slimy or dry. If the fish is old, the color will fade.
5- Smell the fish. A fresh fish should not smell fishy, but should have a sea-fresh smell.
6- Check the scales. Scales should not be missing and they should be firmly attached to the skin.
My last tip would be to ask your fishmonger for the catch of the day. This is the best way to guarantee the fish freshness. You are now ready to go. Make sure to check out my recipes for inspiration. Happy shopping and happy cooking!
